Crisis IN EDUCATION
The Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children has taken on the task of assessing how Liberia might transition its education system to its current post-conflict context. In its March 2006 report, it determined the following about Liberia’s education system:
- twenty percent of teachers are qualified to teach
- the Ministry of Education fails to pay teacher salaries
- there is no state-sponsored teacher training
Liberia was founded as an independent nation with support of the American government, for free-born and formerly enslaved African Americans.
The country’s recent history has been tragic, for during the period that former Communist countries have begun to demonstrate economic strength, Liberia has undergone two civil wars (1989-1996 and 1999-2003) that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people.
The wars destroyed all schools outside the capital city of Monrovia. IDEA works to help establish rural schools and provide training for rural teachers.
